Welcome to the An Everyday Queer New York website, a complementary site to the book A Queer New York. The site is one of a handful that aims to tell more stories than could fit in the book. In my research, my mixed ethnographic / archival approach resulted in my rethinking about the construction of “data.” Who gets to tell or record their queer history, and who gets to access it? And how could more queer history reach more people, especially queer people? As a critical queer feminist geographer, I (Jack Gieseking) decided to produce a series of LGBTQ data visualizations from the archival research I collected from the Lesbian Herstory Archives about lesbian, queer, and trans history, a project of visualizing the “invisible.” These data visualizations, which include the series of interactive maps and eventually, afford another form of interactive, public queer history.
